The Saga of Miles Forrest

The only thing bad about this plan was that someone could get killed.  Windy Dawson, a good man, was up in the Express Car with the regular railroad guard along with the two guards hired to see this shipment through.  I was in the car next to the Express.  Hopefully the guise would work, and hopefully when the outlaws appeared they would not do any shooting, but just grab the “ore” and leave.
With the heavy load I didn’t figure the attack would happen in the mountains, but down on the flat where they could have a wagon waiting.  I sat in the car, waiting, wishing for the old days when they had a stove in the car and a coffeepot.  Sitting there I began to think that the first thing I need to do when I get home was work on the cabin.  We had a table and couple of chairs with a pallet by a good fireplace.  But that was all; there needed to be improvements made.  Who knows, maybe some day Molly and I would have a family.
The slowing of the train brought me out of my thoughts.  This was it.  The train stopped; I could hear talking but not what was being said.  So far, so good.  I moved to the back of the car where I could get a look without giving myself away.  There was a wagon being brought up for the bullion.  Then it came…
“Where’s Forrest?”
I saw the man talking start back to my car with another man.
“Forrest come out!  I have a few things to settle with you!”
I recognized the voice from the eatery.  There was no way I was going to go out there.  Looking around I went out the back door and climbed to the top of the car and quietly began to move toward the Express Car.
“Forrest, this is the last warning!  No use getting anyone else hurt.”
I was about half-way over the top when I heard a shot.  Then a couple more, and then it sounded like a small battle had ensued.  I hurried and saw men behind the wagon firing into the car.  I pulled the Schofield and fired hitting one man at the wagon.  One of the men below looked up and fired, but he was too hasty.  The angle was poor, but I fired anyway.  There was a yelp, so I must have hit him somewhere.
Then shots came up through the rooftop.  Someone was inside.  I jumped across to the top of the Express Car.  The shooting had quieted down, so I laid down on top of the car and tried to push my belly into the wood.
There were more shots from the car I just came from and then a man hollered.  “Get that wagon moving!  Toland, get my horse over here!”
I had open shots, but figured it was best to just stay hunkered and let them ride off.  I would go for them later, but now I was concerned about what was happened inside the car.  One man leaped out; one of the guards jumped on the wagon with the bullion.  Guess that meant that one didn’t make it.
After they were completely gone from sight I climbed down and went to the open door of the Express.  The conductor and engineer were coming my way as well.  Windy was down as were the railroad guard and the outlaw. Outside, one outlaw was dead.
“Bout time you got here, Forrest,” Windy sputtered.
He was bleeding from a wound in the leg, arm, and it looked like the neck.  “Don’t think any of these will kill you,” I said.  “Unless you bleed out.  I need to get the blood stopped.”  Best I could, I began to patch him.  The neck was just a graze, and I was soon able to get the bleeding stopped.
“That fool railroad guard started it.  He couldn’t relax, and one of those outlaw guards pushed him and he reached for his shotgun.  That’s when he was shot.  Then those outside started shooting.  I didn’t have much of a chance.  I shot one of the guards and just emptied my gun on those outside when I finally when down.  They must have been fired blindly like I was just hoping.”
The engineer and conductor were listening.  Dawson looked up, “Any way I could get a drink?”
The conductor went to get a canteen.  “Miles, when they find they’ve been hoodwinked, they’re not going to be happy.  When we get to Pagosa, you better high-tail it back to Durango.  He’ll be wantin’ you.”
I was thinking the same thing.

The Daily Paine

I wonder if they celebrate Gaul day in Europe?  Maybe there is a Visigoth Day, or Vandal Day, or even a Hun Day?  Today, we celebrate Columbus Day and not indigenous people day.  I know Colorado has decided to change the name of the day.  Two Denver schools have also required students to dress Muslim earlier in the year to, I guess, celebrate Sharia Law.  Boulder/Denver has been crazy for a long time, but it seems that pot have put them over the top.
Think of the discovery of America by Columbus, followed by other explorers.  What has America accomplished?  Don’t give me that stuff about oppressed minorities.  It is much worse in other countries.  Do we have problems?  Yes!  But work through them, don’t just complain and protest!  There is the talk of the Columbian Exchange and it mostly revolves around the concept of the diseases brought to America by the Europeans.  Funny, there is little talk about the disease–syphilis–being taken to Europe that was common among the “indigenous peoples.”  Also there was much more with the Columbian Exchange:  grains, fruit, vegetables, horses, cattle, to name a few.  Europeans also brought education, art, language, schools, libraries.
Then, the most important thing–Christianity came to a heathen people.  This is largely cast aside mostly because of those who are the cheerleaders for an indigenous day are also opposed to Christianity.  The Great Commission by Jesus is to take the Gospel to the world.  Were there problems, sure, but the Word of God came to a lost people and in many areas if was greatly accepted.
So, have a happy Columbus Day!

So the words of Donald Trump have become a scandal.  I have heard many times that actions speak louder than words, but I see very little in the news about the actions of a Bill Clinton.  I see very little of the scandals, and the actions of Hillary.  Do you happen to think that the media might be biased?  No, never!  Maybe there is an agenda with the left-wing?  No, doesn’t exist!
That is not to pardon or to ignore Trump’s words.  But read some of the words that Hillary has used in private, especially with military.  Oh, that’s right, the media is not reporting that.  What is her view toward gun control, or even more important toward an unborn baby?  What did she say about Christians?  That we need to put our Christianity aside in regard to the idea of abortion.
Guess we’ll see if actions really speak louder than words.

There is so much to do about liberty in Christianity today.  Most folk use it as an excuse to live a licentious life, or have no real clue what the concept really is.  Paul wrote about liberty in several places.  “Because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” (Romans 8:21, NKJV)  “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1, NKJV)
We are to have a liberated life.  We were once in bondage to sin; the Jews were in bondage to the Law, not we are free.  The problem is that we often do not recognize what we are free from.  Israel was released from the bondage of Egypt.  They were slaves under an oppressive people.  Egypt is a “type” of sin in Scripture.  Notice, when they were out in the wilderness they wanted to go back to Egypt–to go back to sin.
“If Christ came to liberate us from a miserable life, why do we go on living the same old miserable way?  We think a life totally free of fear and guilt is too incredible.  We cannot imagine life with 24-hour-a-day rest and peace–life without a heavy burden of condemnation or depression–life in the presence of a loving, gentle Savior who cares about all our needs.”  (David Wilkerson)

Coffee Percs

He had eaten a meal of beef and chili and enjoyed several cups of coffee, and after that he had walked out back and seated himself on a rock in the sun.”
”Louis l”Amour

It’s been a week pard, I shore got tired, but get on in here and sit yourself down.  I’ll go get the coffee.  Plenty of chores today, so made plenty of coffee, hot and strong.  I’ll be glad when this election is over; so tired of the media, so tired of the ads already.  Yuh know we have two of the oldest candidates, if that term even fits them, runnin’ for office.  Few have been older.
Seems like those heavenly horses are stirrin’.  The Lord will surely be releasin’ those first four soon.  Look at the world; my how can it get any worse; evil is rampant.  What will it be like when evil is cut loose?  Just can imagine it.  Right now we’re just gettin’ a taste of what the world will face.  Maybe the Lord has the coffee on the heavenly stove right now, for that Marriage Supper can’t be very far away.
Ahhh, that’s good coffee.  I think craziness is the world right now.  Confusion seems to be the norm.  Now if there is confusion ’round pard, we know where that comes from.  Yep, the ol’ devil himself.  Notice, there is even the effort for those runnin’ for the president to confuse the issues; that right there should tell you somethin’.  One thing sure, this coffee is straight!  Makes the ol’ gizzard smile.  I’ll try and get you out of here before graylight comes on, just now beginnin’.
You have a good day pard, the week is a-waitin’ so need to get this one finished up.  Don’t go drinkin’ any weak coffee, and don’t forget to check your cinch.
