The Saga of Miles Forrest

The two men told us that they had a small claim on up the mountain.  “This fellow Shawley was looking for work, but he had been wounded.  He said it was when he took a fall and landed on a jagged rock,” the man named Billy Brice told us.  “Well, Sheriff, you know how it is, a man is hurt, a person just don’t go askin’ him questions, he helps them get back on their feet.  Shawley spent the winter with us; helped us with grub and worked on small things at the claim.”
“Did yuh ever think he might have been shot?” I snapped.
“The thought did occur to me, but I wasn’t goin’ to question him about it,” replied Brice.
“Didn’t think he might be runnin’ from the law?” I kept hounding him.
“Mister, ’tweren’t none of my business.  I’ve seen several folks in these here camps that have been shot and weren’t running from the law,” barked Brice right back.
I sighed, he was right, but it still rankled me some.  “You didn’t consider that he might shoot you and take your claim?” inquired Charlie.  I could see he was a bit miffed too.
Then he turned to the other man, “What about you?  No concerns about the man?”
He looked over at Brice and shook his head.  “I’m holdin’ to the goodness of mankind,” he stammered.  “No need askin’ a person ’bout his past.  Maybe he’s makin’ amends for his wayward ways.”
“What’s your name, anyway?” I growled.
       “Picken, Tom Picken.”
“Well, Samaritan Picken, I expect the Sheriff here will want you to stick around and sign a written statement, so don’t be traipsin’ off somewhere,” I said.
“Drag him off to the undertakers, then meet us down at the marshal’s office.  We’ll be along as soon as we finish eating,” Charlie ordered them.
I stared at them, my eyes on fire.  “Don’t make us come lookin’ for you!”
The one man, Picken, started to stutter with his answer.  “Whhyy, we didn’t dooo nothin’ wrong.”
Charlie looked at him.  “The man shot a deputy sheriff and another man.  Therefore, you’ve been aiding a wanted man.  It could cost you five years in the state pen.”
Both their eyes widened and Brice muttered something to Picken then nodded back at us.  “We’ll be there.”  Then each took an arm to drag Shaw from the eatery.
Flo was standing there, hands on her hips staring at the men as they drug Shaw out, then looked down at the floor.   She wasn’t happy when she saw the blood and the streak it left as the body was drug out.  She glared at us, then raised her arms to settle the murmuring.  “Folks, it’s all over, go back to your meals.”  She approached our table, “I’ll deal with you two in a few minutes,” she said in a huff then rushed off to the kitchen.  A few seconds later there was a Chinaman down to wash off the worst of the blood.
She came back with a cup of coffee in her hand and promptly took a chair between Charlie and me.  She looked first at Charlie then over to me.  After taking a sip of coffee she spoke, “Boys, I know you were just doing your job, but you could have waited until he was outside.”
“No, Ma’am, I couldn’t,” I responded quickly.  “Shaw was aware that we had recognized him and stood to shoot Charlie in the back.  I had to act when I did.”
Her eyes were on mine for several seconds.  “Miles, you’ve always been a man quick to react,” she paused.  “But you’ve always been honest.”  Then she smiled looking around the eatery.  “At least I only lost one table in the ruckus.  Men up here are used to a little gunplay now and then and they know that some blood usually goes with the deal.”
Flo finished her coffee, then stood up.  “Next time, be a little more considerate.”
We watched her head off toward the counter in the front of the room and hop up on a stool by the cash register.
“Let’s eat so we can hurry down to the jail.  I still want to go see Shy before the day’s out,” remarked Charlie.
“Think we ought to walk the streets tonight, sorta let the town know that the law is back?” I questioned.
Charlie was nodding his head.  “Might be a good idea.  Now hush up, I’m hungry.”

Echoes From the Campfire

All we require in this service are absolute courage, absolute loyalty, and absolute integrity.”

                         –Paul I. Wellman  (The Comancheros)

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
                         –1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)
—————————————–
What vows have you made to God?  Have you ever promised Him something and failed to keep the promise?  Then start doing so.  A failure does not negate the vow.  Start fulfilling your vows now.  Don’t wait.  God is faithful, God answers prayers, God will not neglect His promises; therefore, we need to recognize our responsibility in being faithful to Him and going to Him with our needs.  Let’s look at the first part of Psalm 65.

1 — Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion; and to You the vow shall be performed.
2 — O You who hear prayer, to You all flesh will come.
3 — Iniquities prevail against me; as for our transgressions, You will provide atonement for them.
4 — Blesses is the man You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts.  We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple.
5 — By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our salvation, You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of the far-off seas. (NKJV)

It is time to pay our vows.  Troubles and trials for once may be tranquil; take this opportunity to pay your vows.  God has forgiven our sins; He shows us that He is the God of our personal lives.  He has answered our prayers.  He has forgiven our sins though they may have been many.  Verse 3, in the NLT puts it this way, “Though our hearts are filled with sins, you forgive them all.”  God does not pick and choose what sins to forgive.  The cross took care of them all.
When I read verse 4, three things come to my mind.  The first, of course, is the Jewish Temple.  It was always a thrill when a Jewish person was able to go to the Temple and worship.  The second thing that comes to mind is the Temple in the New Jerusalem.  There we will actually see the Lord Himself and give praise in that heavenly Temple.  Perhaps what strikes me most is that we should be praising because we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit.  We often do not realize, nor think of ourselves, as the Temple of the Holy Spirit.  The person of Christ lives in us, therefore, we should be praising, fulfilling our vows, and basking in the wonderful joy of His love.
Think of that “personal temple.”  What did you do yesterday in regard to the realization that you are the Temple of the Holy Spirit?  That is why Paul states that everything we do should be unto the Lord (Colossians 3:17,23) for as we walk through this world we are showing forth the “temple.”   Because we have hope, we should be showing and living that hope in front of the world.  Despite the evil in the world, we have hope that Christ is with us, that He has redeemed us, and that He is coming back to take us to be with Him in glory.

“Saints below, with heart and voice,
                     Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.”
                                 –Needham

Coffee Percs

Many a time I’ve lived for days on nothin’ but coffee and dust. It’s a test of your manhood.”

                         –Elmer Kelton

Mornin’ Pard, come on in.  Sorry I didn’t wait for yuh this mornin’ but I surely wanted a cup of coffee.  Don’t be frettin’ none, I made a whole pot and if’n that one goes dry I can always make another.  Wanted that early coffee Pard, so that was the first thing on my mind.  There’s several things stirrin’ ’round up there.
Of course today is a solemn day, or at least it should be.  This country’s in trouble and that’s a fact.  In trouble in more ways than one.  My mercy, what has happened.  Today is Patriot Day–the day we remember that deadly attack on the Twin Towers.  The day that Isalmic jihadists took aim at innocent civilians.  Some of the things they are sayin’ out there today is just downright shameful and really don’t make any sense.  The “woke” crowd, and that bunch of snowflakes and twinkies say that 9/11 education should “avoid blame”.  There should be no name callin’, no attachin’ blame to any group of people.  They want a “live and let live” philosophy, but Pard, the other side don’t agree with that.  The “wokes” say that all the gruesome details of the event should be hidden.  In fact, the best way to discuss what happened on 9/11 is not to discuss it at all.  Pard, almost makes me want to cry at their foolishness.  With what has just happened and is happenin’ in Afghanistan how can/did we become so complacent?
Another thing that just jerks my jaws was what the President said the other day in a speech.  He said, “We’re going to protect vaccinated workers from unvaccinated co-workers.”  Now, Pard, I ain’t no genius, but look at that statement.  If a person is vaccinated, and if the vaccination is supposed to work why in the world do they need to be protected from the unvaccinated?  Now, that one’s got me scratchin’ my head.  Yuh seein’ why I needed to be drinkin’ my coffee before yuh showed up.  Foolishness abounds; stupidity is held high on a pedestal–of course, them folks that are doin’ it don’t have a clue, or, hmmm, it’s part of a diabolical agenda.
Take a deep swallow, for I’ve got another one for yuh.  I saw that some wise-guy professor,  (I don’t really know what it is that he professes) said that apple pie is racist.  Now, that one kinda dumb-struck me.  It was all about something from the Columbian Exchange, the whiteness of the crust, and the slave labor producin’ the sugar.  My how some folk get hung up on what took place a couple hundred years ago.  Shows their purposeful ignorance, which is stupidity, because there is more slavery today than ever before in history.
Pard, we just keep goin’ on.  Coffee to soothe the gizzard, then we move forward.  Saddle up and head out to do the work of the day for that’s what the Lord expects of us.  We leave things, and that means our lives in His hands.  We get the job done, and Pard, that means yuh have to check yur cinch.
        Vaya con Dios.

Echoes From the Campfire

——————————————–
The first woe pronounced by God on the land through the prophet Isaiah was because of materialism and greed.  The second woe of Isaiah 5, comes from what Lloyd-Jones describes as the “pleasure mania; intemperance with regard to pleasure.  In verses 5:11-17, three things stand out:  strong drink, music, and disregard for the work of the Lord.  “Men and women are drunk on pleasure and live for it.” (Lloyd-Jones)
Man seeks to reave up the senses.  They crave pleasure, and because of that they crave even more.  Pleasure becomes the supreme thing in life.  They believe that works is the means of providing money to buy pleasure.  Life is one of seeking, not one of glorifying God.  “Pleasure becomes such a gripping power that they are mastered by it; they rise up early in the morning that they may follow it and continue until night.  The ‘good time’, this is the thing, not honest toil, not real work, not concern about living a full life.”  (Lloyd-Jones)
This life is artificial.  It is maintained by drink, by singing, by music, by being entertained.  It is life that appeals to the emotions.  It is a life that is kept going by artificial stimulants; therefore, in reality, it is an artificial life.

11 — Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may follow intoxicating drink; who continue until night, till wine inflames them!
12 — The harp and the strings, the tambourine and flute, and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the operation of His hands.(NKJV)

Notice:  they become “inflamed.”  The instincts, the passions, the desires, and the lusts take control.  “Men and women become like beasts, controlled by the instincts of the lower part of their bodily nature.” (Lloyd-Jones)  This is the life–they say.  Look at television, at movies, at social media and see how much these things are mentioned and used in having the “good life.”  “They hate the idea of the soul; they do not believe in God and in eternity.” (Lloyd-Jones)
People are ignorant.  They do not regard the Lord; they do not regard the works of the Lord.  They are ignorant to the fact that this artificial life will never satisfy.  They who live for pleasure will never have enough.  In fact, they very things they chase seek to provide some sort of escapism.  Whether it be by drugs or alcohol, through music with its lyrics and beat, or through living in a fantasy world via entertainment, it is all a form of escape.  Because of that there is a progressive degeneration.  “Life becomes more and more selfish as people live for themselves in order to get their pleasure.” (Lloyd-Jones)
Jesus, in Luke 6:24-26, speaks of woes that will come upon man.  Read them all, but for now contemplate on verse 25, “Woe to you who are full, for you shall hunger.  Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.” (NKJV)  Consider what is happening in the world.  Consider what you are doing with your life.  Be serious, look around you.  Look at the foolishness that is taking place.  Look at the ignorance and stupidity.  What are you watching, what are you consuming, what are you listening to, what are you feeding upon?  Do they bring glory unto the Lord?  If not, stop–stop and be serious about your life and glorifying the Lord.  Do not get caught up in the games that take you away from the purpose of God.  Humble yourselves, do not live the artificial life, but if not:

“People shall be brought down, each man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.  But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God who is holy shall be hallowed in righteousness.”
                              –Isaiah 5:15-16(NKJV)
