The Saga of Miles Forrest

I had originally thought that Hoffner was working somewhere in the mountains searching for strays or that something out of the ordinary happened.  Perhaps he was thrown by his horse, or that his horse had stumbled and fell on him.  But now, with what Donovan had said I had a whole different view–Hoffner had left the area, or at least was hiding out.  But why?
“Marshal, he was fidgety, actin’ strange,” recalled Donovan.  “I gave him several days of fixin’s.”
I looked over at Thompson who gave a little shrug.  “First I’ve heard of it.  Bill didn’t say anything about Clyde leaving.”
“Where can I find Farmer?” I asked.  “Hoffner might have said somethin’ to him.”  The way Donovan explained Hoffner’s actions I didn’t think Farmer would know, but it wouldn’t do any harm to ask.
Thompson stroked his chin a few times before he spoke.  “I think he’s…”
“He’s supposed to be in the south pasture looking over the herd and was to meet up with the boys,” interrupted Donovan.
Thompson stared at Donovan for several seconds, then turned his attention to me.  “There you have it Marshal, check the south pasture,” he responded also with a little shrug.
Donovan had just filled up my cup so I took a sip pondering how large the south pasture was.  Donovan was smiling as if he was reading my mind.  “Just head straight south from the barn.  The boys usually camp in a small grove of cottonwoods about an hour from here.”
“Cecil, I really don’t know what’s goin’ on.  I’ll stop back by here before headin’ back to Durango.  Thanks for your time and hospitality.”
He stood up as I did, reaching out his hand.  “I hope he’s not in serious trouble.  Keep me informed, will you?”
“Will do,” I said, then reached for the cup to take my last swallow.
An hour later I saw the cottonwoods, and could make out a small fire at the campsite.  The boys must be taking it easy or Bill Farmer hasn’t found them yet.  When I rode in I waved.  Farmer was there and I recognized another one of the cowboys, the other three I didn’t know.  Thompson had a regular turnover with hands.  He paid good wages, but was a rough man.  Some said he was hard to work for, but from what I gathered, he expected a full day’s work for the wages he paid.  Lots of punchers wanted to loaf and Cecil had no trouble turning them loose.
After dismounting I walked up to the fire.  One of the punchers already had a cup of coffee poured for me, and who was I not to accept the offer.  “What brings you way out here, Marshal?” questioned Farmer.  He looked quickly at the four men with him to see if any of them were startled at seeing a marshal approach them.
I nodded at the crew to let them know that they were not under my scrutiny, then answered Farmer.  “I’m lookin’ for Clyde Hoffner.  Any idea where he might be?”
Farmer shook his head, then looked toward the others.  “Any of you know anything about Clyde?”
A man who had been sitting by the fire stood and came to me.  “I saw Clyde just before he left.  He said he had to leave.  I asked him why and he wouldn’t answer just said, ‘Because’,” the man paused, took off his hat to wipe his brow and when he had replaced it continued.  “Marshal, I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but there was a rider come up to the house and barged into the bunkhouse.  There were only a couple of us there and we didn’t appreciate his manner, but we also noticed the way he carried his gun.”
       “Go on,” I urged.
“He said he was looking for Clyde.  I replied that he wasn’t here.  He stared at me with eyes that gave me the shivers.  Honestly, I thought he was going to pull his gun and shoot me.  That’s when Ozzie spoke up telling the man that I was telling the truth.”
“Marshal, he turned to leave, but stopped to glare at both of us.  ‘If you’re lying, I’ll be back and it won’t go well with either of you,’ then he strode on out the door slamming it behind him.”
I took a swallow and washed the coffee through my mouth before swallowing.  “Marshal, Ozzie and I were telling the truth.  Clyde had done left a few hours before.”
Shaking my head, I muttered, “What in the world had Clyde gotten himself into.  That man, could it have been the man in the diner?”
“What was that you were saying, Marshal”? asked Farmer.
“Nothin’, just talkin’ to myself.  Thanks for the coffee and the information.  Let me know if you see Clyde.  I want to talk to him before that other fellow finds him.”

Echoes From the Campfire

A cold camp can be a reminder of how alone a person is.  A campfire has the opposite effect.  Even in warm weather the fire warms the soul.”
–Cliff Hudgins  (Viejo and the Lost Child)

“And He who sent Me is with Me.  The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
                         –John 8:29(NKJV)

What is it that you really want from life?  Is it riches, fame, power or something else?  Perhaps it is to be comfortable, live a life of ease and just to enjoy the pleasantness and forget all the troubles that are in the world.  Some would like to remove themselves, be like the monks of times past.  There are some who want the thrill of a “high” whether it be drugs, alcohol, or excitement.  The last part of Psalm 73, Asaph puts things in proper perspective.

25 — Whom have I in heaven but You?  And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
26 — My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 — For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry.
28 — But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works.  (NKJV)

I think it ironic that some who reject God want to replace Him with something else.  There must be some kind of god, and everyone, whether they realize it or not, has a theology.  All have a theological statement, including the atheist.  They would say, “In the beginning, no god.”  Not much of a statement, but one nevertheless.  They think they have found something–a new culture, virtual reality, a new reality when really it is false.
It is surely time for the believer to awaken to reality.  Life is sometimes tough, but why moan and murmur about it?  God is the author of your salvation and seek His guidance, deliverance, and/or comfort.  When negative things come our way God does not give us this attitude, but we choose it ourselves.  We can blame God, others, or take on the responsibility for our actions.  We can see the storm as something to dread or something to overcome.  What do you do when everything caves in and the world seems to be against you?  Be like Asaph and turn to God.
What do you really want from life?  Look at verse 25, “I desire you more than anything on earth” (NLT).  We may fail, we may suffer, we may doubt at times, but we should still, above all else, desire Christ.  In Christ alone is our substance and security.  The wicked and evil men might seem to be getting ahead in this life, but in reality they are only securing their own destruction.  Charles Wesley, upon his deathbed, dictated these words to his wife, “Jesus, my only hope thou art…”  The word, in all of their made up false reality and fantasy has no hope.  Ahh, but we as Christians have the hope of Jesus Christ, our Savior and soon coming King.

                    “That, having all things done,
                    And all our conflicts past,
Ye may o’ercome, through Christ alone,
                    And stand complete at last.”
                               –Charles Wesley

Coffee Percs

He set back his plate, drank his coffee, and sat idle a moment.”

–Ernest Haycox  (Head of the Mountain)

Whoopee, Pard, it’s been an eventful week.  There for a while I was feared I wasn’t gonna be able to get a Perc out.  Yuh know, there’s folks out there depending on that little burst on a Saturday mornin’ along with their coffee.  As weak as some make their coffee, my burst of writin’ might be stronger than their brew.  What d’ yuh think?  Strong enough for yuh, Pard?  Ahhh, makes my gizzard smile.
Yep the internet went down.  From what I heard someone cut through the cable.  There’s quite a bit of construction goin’ on so maybe one of the crews did it.  An’ speakin’ of that–Pard, they’re movin’ in on us.  We hid out here in the woods, and now someone is buildin’ across the road from us, and a surveyor came by the other day sayin’ that someone is plannin’ on buildin’ next to us.  Yuh get out in the woods to get away from folks annoyin’ yuh, to have a bit of solitude, and what happens?  They come out to join yuh.
Had cataract surgery last week and this week.  Now my eyes are clear again.  It takes a little gettin’ used to.  I can see clearly now, but up close I need those readin’ glasses.  I was thinkin’ of the sayin’–some people can’t see the forest for the trees.  Well, I want to tell yuh I can see the trees clearly, but it’s that fine print and writin’ my notes and books that bother me some.  I like to look out the window at the forest when I write, but then I have to take my glasses off.  On and off, but mind yuh, I’m not complain’ as I can see clearly.
Perhaps that is the way some folks look at the world and God’s Word.  They are lookin’ at it through the foggy lens of a spiritual cataract.  It might be good if the Holy Surgeon came along and helped clear up their vision.  A clear vision is sorely needed in this day of evil and confusion.  Why they put someone on the Supreme Court who says they cannot define a woman.  Phooey, it doesn’t take much intelligence to tell the difference.  It shows to yuh the direction this country is takin’ and those men in the Senate don’t have enough gumption to take a firm stand.  Be wary and ready, my friend.
Sure was good to spend some time with yuh this mornin’ an’ to enjoy a good cup of coffee.  The Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise I’ll be here next week, or should I say if the internet doesn’t go on a frenzy.  Yuh be takin’ care of yurself, Pard–check that cinch.
      Vaya con Dios.

Echoes From the Campfire

If a feller don’t fuss about what he knows for sure, the things he don’t know ain’t apt to bother him none. It’s this here guessin’ that sure gets a man down.”

“Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.  He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.”

How to Live in a Pagan, Apostate, and Foolish World

Key Verse:  “We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the power and control of the evil one.”  –1 John 5:19 (NLT)

The devil cares nothing about you.  He doesn’t care if you are rich or poor, healthy or sick.  He doesn’t care what condition you are in just as long as you do not believe in Jesus Christ.  If you believe in Jesus he takes great offense and will fight you, attempt to destroy you (especially your faith) and hinder your walk with the Lord in any way he can.  James writes, “Where do war and fights come from among you?  Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” (4:1, NKJV)
But oh, be thankful for the grace of God.  Now, we are children of God.  Remember, the past two lessons?  WE KNOW!  There is no doubt about it.  Failure and stumbling may come, but We Know that we are His child and He watches over us and keeps us.  We Know that we belong to God.  We Know that we are born of God and He is now our heavenly Father.  We delight in Him and we rejoice in Him.  We Know we are controlled by the Holy Spirit; He guides our steps and we live for God.  We Know that we are destined to be like God and to live with Him throughout eternity.  WOW!  If you do not know these things, get into the Word and let the Holy Spirit saturate your souls with these truths.
This old world is in chaos and there are some things we know regarding it as well.  We Know that the world is not improving and that it is under the control of the evil one.  We Know that evil must be controlled and kept in bounds.  Currently that is one of the culture fights.  God’s righteous moral laws versus those thought up by man–absolute truth versus relative truth.  We Know that evil will finally be judged and damned.  The evil one will one day be cast into the Lake of Fire.  Because of this evil world, because of the fight that comes from within, We Know that we constantly need to be cleansed.

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.  This is the true God and eternal life.”
                                    –1 John 5:20 (NKJV)

       We Know Jesus!
