Coffee Percs

It has become a place I could not leave alone, or my quiet talks with her, nor the good coffee in the candlelight.”

                    –Louis L’Amour

Pard, come on in, the coffee’s ready, but my mind’s a-wanderin’.  I was readin’ something on that there facebook and saw that Gary and Kathy Hines had their wedding anniversary and something in my mind perked up.   I was a groomsman at that weddin’ an’ in the audience watchin’ the knot-tyin’ was a gal by the name of Annie Baker.  It fell to me to take her home after the doin’s.
A storm had come up, and a few tried to get us to stay over until it blew through, but I reckoned I could manage.  I had traveled two days before from an FCA conference in Estes Park, drove twenty-four hours and slept in the car across the street from the house of the bride.  I remember the look on her mother’s face when I knocked on the door the next mornin’.  Take a sip, I need one for I’m gettin’ off subject.
Ahhh, that’s better, now back to the storm.  The night was dark, the rain was hard.  I knew there was a moon up above, but with the dark clouds and rain it was nowhere in sight, no moonbeams shinin’ down as we traveled the road to her home in Pennsylvania.  We were travelin’ the turnpike, and my innards were all in turmoil, and with the heavy weather bearin’ down, I decided to pull off the turnpike for a spell.  It was a decision that would change forever the lives of several people, but especially this ol’ fencepost and Miss Baker.  I wasn’t an ol’ fencepost back then, just a young splinter.
But in that romantic settin’, the trucks whizzin’ by, the lightning an’ thunder outside, an’ the rain beating down on the roof of my ’64 LeMans Pontiac, I pulled her into an embrace an’ asked her to marry me.  Maybe it was a splinter, but she yelped (sorta) an’ said yes.  No, I didn’t get down on bended knee, no I didn’t already have a ring, and almost didn’t get one, but that’s another story.  There wasn’t even a thermos of coffee in the car that we could drink in celebration, but there was a bunch of released tension just like I’d gotten off ol’ Bodacious.
Pard, I’ll tell yuh, I was one happy feller!  Ten months later we were married.  Now I’m not a-sayin’ that Gary and Kathy’s weddin’ had anything to do with it, but it sure put the thought in our minds.  The Lord works in mysterious ways, an’ Pard, don’t yuh forget it!  A boy from Colorado, meets a girl from Pennsylvania, in Missouri.
Sure I’m smilin’, memories have a way of doin’ that do yuh.  Either make yuh smile, or gives the gizzard fits dependin’ on the memory.  Sorry for the nostalgia, Pard, but the Lord guides our steps and we need to be willin’ to abide by His advice.  I for one sure did reckon that He brought her my way, and the knot the preacher tied (her brother Jon) has sure seen fit and tight.
Take a looksee in the mirror an’ yu’ll know what I mean about the Lord workin’ in mysterious ways.  Gaze at those lumps–they came from yuh fallin’ on yur noggin’ ’cause yuh didn’t check yur cinch, an’ the good Lord has still seen fit to keep yuh around and use yuh for the Kingdom.
                  Vaya con Dios.

Echoes From the Campfire

It doesn’t pay to get involved with the devil’s play.”

“But Christ, God’s faithful Son, is in complete charge of God’s house. And we Christians are God’s house—he lives in us!—if we keep up our courage firm to the end, and our joy and our trust in the Lord.”

                    –Hebrews 3:6 (Living Bible)
——————————–
I know this is not Monday, and I know I wrote regarding this Psalm several years ago, but I felt led to look at it again and afresh.  We live in a troubled time!  There is no doubt about it.  It seems like Satan and his minions are trying to take control openly.  They used to primarily roam in the darkness, the shadows, and in certain locations, but now…now they openly flaunt their wickedness in the media, the halls of government, academia, and even the medical field.
The NKJV Study Bible, states this regarding Psalm 1, “The psalm is like a beacon of light piercing the darkness of a stormy night.  It illuminates and points to the truth even when the falsehoods of our culture begin to cloud our thinking.  The psalm affirms that there is one way to true life; to ignore this way is to foolishly accept death.”  Let’s look at these vital verses a little more closely.
Verse 1, “Blessed,” in the New Testament the term means “Happy, to be envied,” and it is a term of joy.  To walk in the way of the Lord is a joyful experience.  This person has separated themselves from the evil world system.  They “walk not” meaning more upon inspection.  It means not to walk beside, standing with, or sitting beside wickedness.  It is to not become yoked with any form of wickedness and evil.  This is a person in the world, but not of the world, nor affected by the world.
Verse 2, What do we delight in?  This person delights and finds enjoyment in the Word of God, not in the wickedness and schemes of the world.  There is a definite separation between the believer and the person of the world.  Meditation is a lost practice in the church today.  Meditation can be translated “to mumble” or “to speak to oneself.” (NKJV Study Bible).  Biblical meditation is focusing the mind on the Word of God.
Verse 3, A tree planted!  A tree is valuable especially in the desert areas.  All parts of the tree are valuable.  It provides shade and rest, it provides fuel for fires (hmmm, the Holy Spirit), it is productive in bringing forth its fruit.   The believer is always useful and productive to the Lord.  I think more of the term “season” than I used to.  There are various seasons in life, some are more productive than others, and some seasons produce other types of fruits.  True prosperity comes from knowing and following God’s will.
Verse 4, speaks very plainly by itself.  There is no nutritional value in the chaff.  If that is true, why do we associated so much with them or want to be like them?  Chaff is refuse, and is blown away.  This is symbolic of the wind as the Holy Spirit dividing the grain from the chaff.  There is no substance to the wicked or depth of character.
Verse 5, The ungodly shall not stand in the judgment–every knee will bow.  He may strut around now, boasting and mouthing out his arrogance.   But one day the ungodly will bow low before the King of Glory.  The Holman translation (HCSB) puts it this way, “the wicked will not survive the judgment.”
Verse 6, There are two ways, that of the righteous and that of the ungodly.  The Lord watches, protects, cares for, and promises eternal life to the righteous.  He is very much involved with the walk of the righteous, who at the same time seeks to obey the Lord.  The believer then is distinguished by obedience and turns away from harmful and destructive practices.  Point blank–the Bible says, the way of the ungodly shall perish.  Hope is for now, one day it will be too late for the ungodly.
In this evil time, hearken to the words of this Psalm.  Grasp hold of the challenge Paul gave to Timothy and Titus to guard the truth and Peter’s proclamation to stand firm in the faith.  Resolve to be like the armed warriors of Ephesians and having done all to continue to stand.  Do not follow the unrestrained ways of the wicked, but be planted firmly in the truth of God’s Word!

Echoes From the Campfire

If we don’t learn to see with lots more than our eyes, none of us will come out of that big country right-side up or alive.”

—————————————-
When I was a kid one of my favorite games was “hide-n’-seek.”  If was one we most always placed when all the cousins were around.  It was especially fun at night.  Then when I became a parent I used to play it with my daughters.  When they were real small, even before toddler phase, they would hide their heads under a blanket or such and think I couldn’t see them.  They thought they really were hidden.
Then the thought came to my mind as I was pondering what to write.  Hide-‘n’-seek is the oldest game on earth.  If you recall, it was in the cool of the day, when Adam and Eve went to hide for they heard the footsteps of the Lord.  “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:8, NKJV)  It seemed to Adam that the Lord could not find them, for His voice called out, “…Where are you?” (3:9).  Of course, the Lord knew all along where Adam and Eve were hiding…and He knew the reason why.  They were like my kids, thinking they were hidden, but really they were in plain sight to the Lord.
I recall another game of “hide-‘n’-seek.  There came a command from the Lord to the prophet Jonah.  “But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction in order to get away from the LORD.  He went down to the seacoast, to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish.  He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping that by going away to the west he could escape [hide] from the LORD.” (Jonah 1:2-3, NLT, brackets mine).  Look at this–Jonah, a prophet of the Lord thought he could hide.  He thought he could escape the Lord’s attention and that he would not be found.  Oh, what foolishness.  But think–he was one of God’s prophets.  Did he purposely ignore the fact that God is omnipresent and omniscient?  Was he that deceived in his mind?  Very quickly we see that the Lord found him, and then the Lord played His own game of “hide-‘n’-seek.  Jonah was hidden in the belly of the large fish, away from everything and everyone for three days, until he cried out to the Lord.
One more instance comes to my mind when men seek to play “hide-‘n’-seek” with the Lord.  “And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!'”  (Revelation 6:15-16, NKJV)  In that terrible day to come, men will still try to hide from God.  Now they try to hide their deeds, but there will come a time that they will revert to idols and pray that they will hide them from God.  “Don’t let Him seek us.”
Foolishness, but then man in his folly doesn’t understand that God sees his works, his heart.  In the days of Noah the hearts of men were evil, at Sodom God saw that the men were evil, and throughout recorded history there is the evil of man that God sees.  Read the Bible, read the prophets, how the people tried to do wickedness thinking they were hiding it from God.  Hide-‘n’-seek is a fun game for children, but to try to hide from the face of God is not only foolishness, but it is ridiculous to think that it could actually happen.  “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3, NKJV)

Does he own this ranch, or does it own him?”

“There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun:  riches kept for their owner to his hurt.”

———————————–
I was reading, then started pondering and contemplating this past weekend.  The titles of two songs were going through my mind and I started my pea-brain into delving deeper into the words.
“Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need…” (Daniel W. Whittle).  I began wondering and pondering, do we need or want the showers of God’s blessing?  Yes, of course we need, we must have the blessings of His mercy.  They are renewed every morning and every morning we need to be showered with them, and throughout the day.  We need the showers of His grace, for we can do nothing in ourselves.  We need the showers of sanctification, of the growth of the fruit of the Spirit, of His great love.  But many things we want showered with are just wants.  I want this, shower me with the wealth of the world, I want that, shower me with entertainment, shower me with hyper-pogostick praise.  Shower me with pseudo-religion.  Shower me with blessings that I really do not need.  And, you know what, sometimes out of His great goodness, He does shower us with abundance.  However, remember, if the Lord gives us an abundance of something He expects us to use it properly and for the kingdom of God.
I don’t want to belittle that great song.  It is a song of refreshing.  A song that means much to us right now in the midst of the horrendous heat wave and drought.  But we must sing, as we should all songs and hymns, with the right attitude and right motive.
The second song has the chorus”
                    Count your blessings,
                    Name them one by one;
                    Count your blessings,
                    See what God hath done;
                    Count your blessings,
                    Name them one by one;
                    Count your many blessings,
                    See what God hath done.
                             –Johnson Oatman, Jr.
We sing that song, we say we count our blessings, but do we really take the time to thank God for them?  Can we even begin to count all the blessings that the Lord has given us?  I started doing that on Saturday evening.  I became overwhelmed!  The blessings of God in our lives are like the stars in the sky.  They surmount what we can even begin to count.  Do it now, begin to not just count, but ponder the blessings that God has given you.
          Life, but physical and spiritual
          Salvation
          Hope of glory
          Fellowship with Him
          Fellowship with believers
          Assurance
          Health
          Promises from His Word
          Family
          Victories in the past
Your heritage, both natural and physical
          Comfort
and on and on and on and on and on…
Oh the truth of Oatman’s hymn,
When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
