I’ll see you in the morning for coffee then. And make sure to use the Arbuckles, not that swill you served last I was here. And wash your hands ‘fore you make it.”

A man’s got to do things that’s painful and uncomfortable, and he’s got to endure suffering such as he’d never imagined he could.”
–Chris Bennett (Road to Revolution)
“Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering.”
–Hebrews 10:32 (NIV)

“So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.'”

Hang on, Powder River let ‘er buck! That seems to be the way of life sometimes or else we find ourselves hunkering down because of the storm. We’re not exempt from the rough road of life, the bumps, the ruts, and the washed-out places. Problems, trials, problems, issues and the like are there for us. But “we have a Companion who walks beside us, guards us and guides us and smooths our rugged path every day. His presence brightens our path and gives us joy and hope.” (Kauffman)
The song by John W. Peterson came to my mind:
“It’s not an easy road
We are traveling to heaven,
For many are the thorns on the way;
It’s not an easy road,
But the Savior is with us,
His presence gives us joy every day…”
Our part is to be faithful and obedient and walk the way with the Spirit with joy and thanksgiving. Be sure that you never depart from the commandments of the Lord. Live life with expectancy and confidence and hope.
Take the opportunities that come your way and do the best with them.”
–Cliff Hudgins (McNally Texas Ranger)
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
–Psalm 91:11 (ESV)

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”
–Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
O how thankful we should be that we have the blessed Promise of the Father. The Holy Spirit is our Guide: Comforter, Helper, Advocate, Counselor–they all fit His function. He is there to whisper which way we should go. We have the road map of God’s Word in front of us and the Spirit then points the way. But we have to look at the “roadmap” and listen to His quiet voice. Then, we step and walk with confidence.
“Whatever awaits us is encountered first by Him–each difficulty and complication; each wild beast or wilder robber; each yawning chasm or precipitous path. Bind this comfort to your heart: that the Savior has tried for Himself all the experiences through which He asked you to pass; and He would not ask you to pass through them unless He was sure that they were not too difficult for your feet, or too trying for your strength…. This is the blessed life–not anxious to see far in front; not careful about the next step; not eager to choose the path; not weighted with the heavy responsibilities of the future: but quietly following behind the Shepherd, one step at a time.”
–F.B. Meyer
A good bed was what a trail driver yearned for and seldom got.”
–Zane Grey (The Trail Driver)
“And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.”
–Deuteronomy 8:2 (ESV)

Remember the words of the old Sunday School song?
“My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,
All I have to do is follow.
Strength for today is mine always,
And all that I need for tomorrow.”
–Sidney E. Cox
Three things in this verse stand out to me. First, God knows the way, the Holy Spirit is our guide. Second, He gives us strength to walk each day. This is true for today and each day that follows. Third, all I have to do is follow. Follow is all. He guides, He shows the way, He provides the strength–we just have to follow. But what does that entail? Obedience, loyalty, depending on Him, surrender, and we could name a few more. But the key is to follow. The CEV translates the last phrase of Deuteronomy 8:2 this way, “He wanted to find out if you were truly willing to obey him and depend on him.” That’s what Jesus was getting at when He said, pick up your cross daily and follow Me. (Luke 9:23)
Never forget though, we are traveling through enemy territory. In this journey we should be seeking the higher ground–upward to glory, along with a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Christ. In one manner of speaking, we all travel on the same journey, the road to heaven. However, each of us must walk our own way, fulfilling His purpose in our lives. The words of Psalm 84:5 should be etched on our hearts and minds: “Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.” (NKJV) We are pilgrims, not settlers. Travelers through this world to a promised land.
